Looking Out for the Big Guys

What began as a rescue for Weimaraners now accepts all dogs, but focuses their energies on saving large and giant breeds from certain death. Located in Palm Beach County, FL, Big Dog Ranch Rescue offers a true last line of defense for hundreds of souls, burdened by illness, neglect and despair. In fact, many of their canine residents are saved hours – even minutes – before they are slated for euthanasia at area shelters. It is for these reasons, and many others, that the Dr. Jane HealthyPetNet Foundation has selected this noble organization as the latest recipient of a financial award.

Thanks to the tireless and determined efforts of their volunteers, Big Dog Ranch Rescue placed approximately 300 pups in forever homes last year, and aspires to surpass that milestone this year to more than 400. With an average stay at the ranch between two weeks and three months, there are between 35 to 55 dogs cooling their paws on site on any given day.

Their unflagging commitment to creating happily-ever-after stories is even reflected in the physical structure of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. The five-acre property features two air conditioned buildings with 26 kennels, a large home that houses numerous cage-free pups, a fenced-in area in the front yard where the dogs train with their handlers, and a dozen runs where dogs can leap, bound and frolic to their heart’s content. There’s even a small lake where the canines can take a dip and cool off from the Florida heat. No matter where you go, there’s evidence of their strict cleanliness policy, put in place to ensure the health of all of their temporary residents.

In addition to food, shelter and lots of tender, loving care, the dedicated folks at Big Dog Ranch provide all necessary veterinary care. Their standard medical protocol covers a full spectrum of services, including: spaying or neutering; vaccinations for Rabies, Bordetella and Distemper; heartworm tests and treatment if indicated; and so much more.

Prior to approving an adoption request, prospective pet parents must complete a detailed application, provide a veterinarian reference and allow rescue representatives to tour the new home. If an adoption does not work out, for any reason, the dog in question must be returned to the safe haven of the ranch.

Like many rescue groups, this non-profit has seen a dramatic rise in the number of canines who have been surrended because their pet parents have lost their homes and can no longer afford to provide adequate care. On behalf all of the creatures who have been pulled from the rubble of oppressive and unfortunate circumstances, we offer our sincerest thanks.
