2 pet food companies recall for salmonella threat
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Two suppliers of dry pet food, Iams and Eukanuba, have issued a recall due to potential salmonella contamination.
The recall initially was Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal (5.5 lbs.). The Procter & Gamble Company has now voluntarily expanded the recall to Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin. The foods would be marked with “best-buy” dates between July 1, 2010, and Dec. 1, 2011. No canned food, biscuits, treats or supplements are included in this recall.
Anyone who has purchased the recalled items should throw them away, urged the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The health department said there have been no human illnesses reported. However, people handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they do not properly wash their hands after handling the pet food.
Symptoms of salmonellosis in humans include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
